In August 2024, off the coast of Costa Rica’s Tortuguero National Park 🇨🇷, fishermen reeled in something extraordinary: a shark glowing a vivid, almost fluorescent orange with milky white eyes. 🦈
It was a 1.8-metre nurse shark, its rare coloration caused by a combination of xanthochromia and partial albinism, the first documented case in this species.
The healthy animal was photographed from every angle and released alive.
The images went viral worldwide, and in 2025, a scientific study published in Marine Biodiversity officially confirmed the discovery.
